Facebook Change Homepage Format

By Kenneth Watt at 11:00 pm on October 23rd, 2009. Printer friendly version.

Facebook today launched changes to their homepage format for users. Rather than one real-time feed, with any updates shown as a figure at the top of the list, and on click, would update the rest. Now there are two plain old options – News Feed and Live Feed.

Facebook's New Home System

Facebook's New Home System

News Feed

When you load your home page, you’ll see the most significant things that happened in the last day in the News Feed view. It’s all based on a very intelligent system:

News Feed picks stories that we think you’ll enjoy based on a variety of factors including how many friends have liked and commented on it and how likely you are to interact with that story.

Live Feed

Rather than a static page with the highlights on it, Live Feed shows a real-time stream of events. The content of this system can be changed by tweaking the settings.

What do you think? An improvement or not? Comment below :)

  3. christalovesotto says:

also, the posts are not in chronological order. that is the most annoying part! why can't you keep them in order??? change it back please. this is stupid

    SIMPLY STUPID

this is bad business – you didn't research it with the users – didn't let anyone know it was changing – didn't offer the old layout as an alternative – you just made a withdraw from your virtual customer service bank account of 99.9% of customer service and need to do something immediately to recover.
I want to see it like I saw it before, all my friends all the time as they post – if it ain't broke – don't fix it
you can change it back until you get the kinks out or do you just want us to call you "Microsoft"?

suggest you all check out this to see just how irritated folks are with the changes:

  8. Melody says:

Just show on MY page posts from MY friends, please, this is confusing, and annoying. If it isn't broken, don't try fixing it.

  9. Snarfle says:

I hate it so much. ;w; The top updates are randomly my friends boyfriend and he's such a tool make it go away ugh.

I agree that I should be able to decide what I want to read, not have my page be a result of some computerized calculation because I happened to click on certain pages previously. The reason I refuse to subscribe to online newspapers is that I like to skim each (real, newsprint) page and sometimes something will be there that I didn't even know I'd be interested in. It's supposed to broaden my knowledge, not narrow my world. Facebook has the potential to be used intelligently but not if we are limited in how we use it.

Also, if I hide people for any reason, I now don't have the option to view "hidden posts." So I have to keep all of the friends active if I want to keep up. No choice to keep my page trimmed down to the people I want to hear about first, and when I have time, check out the hidden posts. All or nothing, it seems.

    R. Warren, I second what you said. Why change something that is working (well most of the time anyway) to something worse and more time consuming???? I hope they read these comments..

If you dont like the new FB home page here's how you can change it back… Look to the top left menu and click on MORE. Then drag STATUS UPDATES to the top. After dragging to top, click on it. Now the "STATUS UPDATES" is your default a…nd it is like before. Pass it on!

  13. Bene says:

    Hate it!

  14. Jen says:

Please go back to the old system!!

  15. N.C. says:

Everybody is complaining… Why? All it did was added another option. It didn’t take anything away. Now you can see things you missed throughout the day and then go check out the live stream. I don’t get it, why wouldn’t people like that. Options are good people…

Right, now I can see every friend my over 1000 gaming friends added while I was gone. Every group they joined. What happened to our privacy? Next they'll be posting when we go to the bathroom. I think it's time to delete my friends down to the 20 or so I actually know rl. The regular news feed gives hours old random content and not in order, it's useless. And changing to the status thing does not work, that removes every link, every video. And I hoped they'd listen with the massive amounts of members in the new groups that popped up afterwords but I guess not. I miss the highlights they used to have on the right and now my news feed is a complete mess of spam.
